Case Study 1: Google Classroom

Overview: Google Classroom is a beneficial technological tool to be used in a classroom environment.
It allows for access to different google based programs including google docs, google slides, google sheets, google drive and google meet. These different programs allow for communication between not only colleagues but also with parents, and also promotes collaboration amongst staff.

User Engagement: Apps such as google docs and google slides can be used for different classroom assignments/projects, whereas google drive allows colleagues to share and save helpful teaching resources and google meet is beneficial for collaboration because colleagues can quickly hop on a meeting to discuss a topic at hand.

Influence on Communication: Google Classroom allows teachers to have a one-way communication style with parents through email. The parents are kept up to date on the happenings in the school and their child's classroom. The teacher can also use google classroom to email the students as well. Another communication benefit of google classroom is that the classroom teacher has the ability to post announcements on the class page, everyone has the chance to view these announcements as well. Information Consumption: Students pretty much have free reign to access materials at any time that they want to, google classroom provides organization so it is easy to access different lessons. Students can access from their home computers, which makes for a smooth sailing learning tool.

Impact on Learning: A cause for concern with google classroom is taking into consideration that not all students will have access to wifi outside of the classroom, if this is the case, google classroom can still be a beneficial tool inside the classroom to promote collaboration amongst students on assignments/projects.

Privacy and Safety: As for privacy and safety concerns in regards to google classroom, it is a very safe application, the best way to ensure privacy is by making a safe and protective password, that way all your information is not tampered with.

This application allows for photos and videos to be shared as well to present what learning activities the students are doing throughout the school day. It allows teachers to document the school day, but it is also used for academics by providing a space where lessons can be accessed, and assignments can be completed. This app can also be used as classroom management because there is a tool implemented to track student behavior and the students can earn points for positive behavior.

  1. Hi Alexa!

Your post was a great way to showcase the 2 platforms. These 2 platforms are great ones to utilize in the classroom. Google classroom is an easy way for students and teachers to complete and access assignments as well as collaborate and communicate with each other. Google Classroom utilizes an online approach to learning. Google Classroom also has the option for parent access. Teachers can provide access to the Google Classroom and send information to parents regarding Google Classroom assignments. Google Classroom is a great tool that many schools utilize due to its easy accessibility and various user friendly features.

Class Dojo is a great tool with many different features! Class Dojo is an efficient and easy way to communicate with parents and families. Class Dojo also has features that assist with classroom management. Class Dojo emphasizes teachers, students and parents to communicate and collaborate. This may be through sending messages or pictures. One aspect of Class Dojo I love is the aspect that allows students to have a character and earn points towards a reward as a classroom management strategy. This can be a great motivating factor for students. Have you utilized Class Dojo in your classroom before?

  2. Grand ol' Class Dojo! My favorite, least favorite application! I have both a parent and teacher account for Dojo. I absolutely love the design of the app and its ease of use. In my early years using the app, I used the behavior management tool that allowed points to be added for students exemplifying our school values. I prefer to use the app more as a parent than a teacher. My child's teacher posts regular updates about what is happening in class; I always enjoy the pictures on the class page. This year, because of past issues with hostile parents, I have shifted the majority of my communication to e-mail. I have chosen to almost completely detach myself from my teacher DOJO platform. However, I did post my course syllabus on my beloved Google Classroom with my preferred methods of contact.

  3. Hey Alexa! I do not use Google classroom but I have friend who use it and LOVE it! I love how students can easily access lessons and materials from home. I also think it is such a great tool for student collaboration based on the fact that projects can be easily shared and edited by multiple students!

  4. Hi Alexa,
I have experience using google classroom and I enjoy the platform a lot! It allows more assignments to be digitized increasing the opportunity for digital learning. I agree with what you said that a drawback could be that not all students may have access to wifi which prevents them from doing homework on the platform.
